close-up lens, attached to the front of the camera lens, allows the camera to
focus on the subject while maintaining a reasonable distance for lighting.
Equally as important, a close-up lens allows the zoom function to magnify
small objects. See application diagrams below.
Q: My camera has a macro focus lens, why
should I use a close-up lens?
When shooting very small objects the "macro"
function of many digital cameras reduces the focal length to inches or even a
fraction of an inch. This causes a lighting problem because the camera lens
is too close to the subject and blocks the subject light. In addition, when
imaging in a tent with a front cover, the camera is positioned in the front
of the tent while the subject is centered on the bottom inside the tent. This
camera to subject distance is often too far for macro imaging.
Also, some digital cameras macro mode only
works in the wide angle aspect of the lens, therefore limiting or prohibiting
the magnification ability of the zoom.
